The clash between Tunisia and England takes place at the Volgograd Arena on Monday evening. It’s a match of the Group D, in which Belgium and Panama play as well. England plan to get to the knockout stage, but for that to happen they need to do well in the group. What this means is that they’re counting on the three points from this match. But, can Tunisia ruin their plans?
Tunisia ended their World Cup qualification campaign without a single defeat. They finished on the top of the group table with 4 wins and 2 draws, and with a goal difference of 11:4. Truth be told, they didn’t have too many great opponents in the qualifiers, as the teams that played with them in the group were Congo DR, Libya, and Guinea.
But, Tunis did show a lot of quality in the friendlies ahead of the World Cup. They played a draw with Portugal in May, while in their final friendly before the World Cup, they lost only 1:0 to the mighty Spain. This shows that they definitely can put on a good performance when considered underdogs.
Tunisia don’t have big-name players in their squad, but rather rely on teamwork. That said, you can expect all of Tunisia’s eleven players to work hard defensively in order to keep the English players as far away from the goal as possible.
England seem like they might be the dark horse of this World Cup. They have plenty of talent in their squad, something they showed in the qualifiers which they finished on the top of the group table. But, their fans aren’t overly optimistic, as they got disappointed by their team’s performances so many times in the past.
But, this time, there’s no pressure on them. England aren’t expected to finish on the top of the group – the role of the favorite goes to Belgium. Still, they are seen as the runner-ups and I think that’s exactly what Southgate is focused on. He’s probably going to take the game against Tunisia seriously, as a win in this game would get his team a step closer to the Round of 16.
When it comes to the player talent, England are absolute favorites. Their players seem to be several times stronger, faster, and more skillful than those of Tunisia. England’s defense isn’t too brilliant, but their attack is definitely among the best on the planet. Dele Alli and Raheem Sterling will be in charge of creating goal chances, while Harry Kane’s job will be to make turn those chances into goals.
Tunisia will have a lot of problems stopping these guys, which is why they might decide to aim for England’s weakest link, which is their defense. Pickford is expected to be between the posts, which is going to be his fourth-ever match in England jersey. It’s a similar case with Harry Maguire, who’s expected to make his sixth appearance.
Mathlouthi – Ben Youssef, Benalouane, Maaloul, Meriah – Sassi, Khazri, Khaoui, Sliti, Skhiri – Khalifa
Pickford – Stones, Maguire, Walker, Trippier, Young – Henderson, Lingard, Alli, Sterling – Kane
Tunisia vs. England Match Prediction
England need to win this; otherwise they’re might get into serious problems. Not only because of points, but also because of their morale. Beating Tunisia with a large goal difference would give them a lot of confidence for the upcoming duels with Panama and Belgium.
