Monaco vs Marseille Match Preview & Betting Tips

Both Monaco and Marseille have big ambitions for this season. Of course, they probably realize that PSG are just too powerful to let anyone else get the title, but there are still a few positions available. The team that ends as the runner-up of the Ligue 1 automatically gets a place in the Champions League. And both of these sides would love to play there. With 4 points each so far, neither Monaco nor Marseille can be too proud of their performances, which is why their duel of Sunday has even bigger importance. Monaco

Monaco fans are probably glad that August is over. The month started with their team losing 4:0 to PSG in the Trophee Des Champions a.k.a. French Super Cup. They did win the first game of the Ligue 1 season, but then drew with Lille at home and lost to Bordeaux in an away game.

Now they’re facing an even tougher challenge, which they’ll have to go through without a couple of important players. Jovetic is out, same as Raggi and their goalie Subasic. On top of that, the players who have joined the club over the summer still don’t seem to have fitted in the squad properly.

Speaking of the summer transfer window, it’s important to say that this team sold a number of players who were crucial for their last season’s success. I’m talking about Joao Moutinho who went to Wolves, Fabinho who went to Liverpool, and Thomas Lemar who joined Atletico. Of course, these are just a few players who left Monaco this summer, the entire list is much, much longer.

Monaco have cashed in a lot of money from those transfers, which enabled them to go to the market and reinforce their squad. Some of the players they brought in include Aleksandr Golovin, Jean Aholou, and Willem Geubbels. Still, these guys don’t seem capable to fill in the void left by the departure of aforementioned players. At least not for the moment.

Marseille

Unlike Monaco, Marseille weren’t too busy over summer. They did sell and sign a few players, but their last season’s squad is more or less the same. The key men from the 2017/2018 seasons are still in the team. And they’ve started playing very well. This particularly goes for Florian Thauvin and Dimitri Payet, who have already scored two goals each.

Speaking of Marseille’s form so far, they lost one game, drew one, and won once. Therefore, they have 4 points at the moment, the same as their next opponents, Monaco. This is a side with which L’OM have a very bad history, at least in the last couple of years.

The last time Marseille beat Monaco was back in 2015 and that game was played at the Velodrome in Marseille. Their tally is even worse when it comes to away games. More than 8 years have passed since Marseille have beat Monaco at the Stade Louis II.

Monaco vs Marseille Match Prediction

The experience has shown that Marseille are dreadful when playing away games. They lost 3:1 to Nimes already this season, a team that just got promoted from Ligue 2. However, Marseille definitely do have the players capable of beating Monaco, even if the game’s played at Stade Louis II. All considered, I think we might see a draw here, probably with goals on both ends.
