Exactly one week after this game, Lazio play the first part of their Europa League doubleheader with Seville. It’s going to be a very tough game, which is why it’s important for them to make sure their heads don’t drop. And a way to do it is by beating Empoli.

So far in 2019, they have only one win in Serie A, with two defeats. But, to be fair to them, they had a pretty tough schedule at the start of the second half of the season. First, they played to Napoli in Naples, then they welcomed Juve at Olimpico. And after those two defeats, Lazio managed to bounce back with a win over Frosinone.

Frosinone are second from the bottom, which makes Lazio’s victory not too impressive. Actually, most pundits were expected to see Lazio hammering Frosinone, but they beat them only 1:0. They will have to up their performance if they want to get a win against Empoli, who are considerably better than Frosinone in the final third.

But, that probably doesn’t worry them too much, considering that the game takes place at Stadio Olimpico in Rome, where as many as 68,000 supporters can come and support their players. Still, their home form hasn’t been as superior as it was in the past. They have only 5 wins out of possible 11. Maybe it’s time to improve that score?

Empoli

Empoli played draw on two occasions since 2019 started and lost only one game. I say only because this team is among the biggest candidates for relegation. They are just one place above the relegation zone, with only 1 point more than Bologna who are in the zone.

The good news is that there are a few other teams who have been also struggling to collect enough points to get to a safe position. So, even if they lose on Thursday evening to Lazio, it won’t mean that their relegation battle is over.

So, they can relax and play their game, knowing that no one will criticize them too much if they lose. After all, this team has got its fans used to playing poorly away from home. In fact, they’re the worst team in the league when it comes to playing away from home. They’re still without a single away win, with only 4 draws and 6 defeats.
