Switzerland vs Northern Ireland Match Preview
Northern Ireland will have to make all the running in the second leg of the World Cup qualifying as they look to overturn the deficit against Switzerland. The hosts hold a precious 1-0 lead from the first leg which looks very precious. This Switzerland vs Northern Ireland second leg fixture would be played on Sunday, November 12 at St Jakob-Park in Basel.
The Swiss started the first leg as favourites and after a Ricardo Rodriguez’ penalty at Windsor Park on Thursday gave them a 1-0 win, the Swiss look to have their flight to Russia booked. Although they were lucky to have won the first leg, the Swiss dominated possession and looked largely untroubled even when Northern Ireland poured forward in numbers. To be fair to the hosts, they should have directly qualified for the World Cup after dominating the World Cup group qualifiers. However, a 2-0 loss to Portugal in the last round resulted in the Swiss losing direct qualification on goal difference. The Swiss have won 11 of their last 12 games since they were knocked out of Euro 2016 on penalties. At home, they have won six on the bounce, keeping five clean sheets in the process.
That should be an indicator of how difficult the task is for Northern Ireland. They did well to reach the playoffs, finishing second to Germany and ahead of Czech Republic. However, the loss in the first leg has reduced their chances further although a deficit of 1-0 is not insurmountable. They have now lost their last three matches and look highly vulnerable. Away from home, that record is much more dismal as they failed to score in three of their five matches since crashing out of Euro 2016. Michael O’Neill’s men need to be at their best to stop the Swiss from making a fourth straight World Cup and seven out of eight major tournaments.

Switzerland vs Northern Ireland Predictions
Northern Ireland will be under pressure to score for any hopes of progression. However, the Swiss have a formidable defensive record at home while the visitors do not have potent striking options. In the wake of this, it is hard to see how Northern Ireland can come out of this fixture with a win. And, if the Swiss can find an early goal, it could soon turn into a simple win for the hosts.
