The qualifiers for Euro 2020 are on the way and in Group F, Spain is playing against Norway on Saturday evening. The match will take place at Estadio de Mestalla in Valencia and it’s obvious that the host team is the favorite. However, neither side has yet played any games in 2019, so this match might bring us some surprises. The year 2018 wasn’t especially good for the Spanish national football team. Actually, it’s been one of the years they’d like to forget. It all started in June when their manager at the time Julen Lopetegui announced he’s moving to Real Madrid after the World Cup. The Spanish FA thought of his decision as a stab in the back, so they decided to fire him.
Of course, changing the manager right before the biggest tournament in the football universe is never a smart idea. And the result was that the players were upset and confused. Despite everything, they did well in the group stage under the new manager Fernando Hierro, finishing on the top of the group table above Portugal.
But, then, in the Round of 16, they got knocked out by the tournament host, Russia on penalties. After the disappointment at the World Cup, they got themselves another coach. This time, they picked Luis Enrique who’s still in charge. During his tenure, Spain have played in the UEFA Nations League, in the League A in a group with England and Croatia. Despite failing to win the group, they did do okay.
Actually, Spain were pretty impressive on a couple of occasions. For example, they hammered Croatia 6-0 at home. And that match was played in Elche, a city in southern Spain, some 150 kilometers away from Valencia where they’re going to play against Norway. Maybe this kind of climate works great for the Spaniards and maybe they’ll do something similar once again?
Of course, Norway are nowhere near Spain when it comes to player quality. That’s why they had to play in the League C in the Nations League last year, where they finished on the top of their group, leaving behind Bulgaria, Cyprus and Slovenia. It’s not a too impressive achievement, but winning the group has certainly given their players a confidence boost.
What they showed in the UEFA Nations League is that they’re a pretty tough nut to crack. They’re very good at defending, allowing only 2 goals in 6 matches of the competition. However, what’s got to worry them ahead of their trip to Spain is that both of those goals happened when they were playing away from home. One happened in the 1-1 draw with Slovenia and the other one was a match winner in the match with Bulgaria.
Another thing that needs to worry them is that they don’t have too much experience playing against strong teams such as Spain. Actually, the last time they played against an elite opponent was in 2017, when Germany hammered them 6:0 in Stuttgart.
De Gea – Ramos, Martinez, Sergi Roberto, Alba – Busquets, Parejo, Asensio, Saul – Rodrigo, Morata
Jarstein – Nordtveit, Rosted, Aleesami, Elabdellaoui – Henriksen, Selnaes, Fossum, Odegaard – King, Kamara
Spain vs Norway Prediction
Anything but a big home win seems impossible to me. Spain are just so much better than Norway that I’d be really surprised if we didn’t see at least 3 goals at the back of Norway’s net.
