There is only one game remaining at this year’s African Cup of Nations in Egypt. Senegal and Algeria have made it to the finals, and we are expecting to see one hell of a match. It is hardly going to end as a high-scoring affair, but it should be a big battle of two great squads. Both have had similar performances and results in the playoffs, and interestingly, they were in the same group in the first stage. Judging by the odds presented by online bookmakers, there is no real favourite in this one. Both teams are priced at identical 2.70 (17/10) rates for the win. Can Algerians beat the Lions of Terenga for the second time in this tournament? John Pentin, editor in chief of a UK leading betting predictions website believe so.
The Desert Warriors Have 100% Win Rate So Far
Algeria is the only AFCON 2019 participants with the 100% win rate so far. Their group stages have started with a dominant performance and 2-0 victory against Kenya. Riyad Mahrez and Baghdad Bounedjah were the goal scorers in that one. Manchester City’s player is one of the biggest candidates to win the MVP trophy as well. He demonstrated fantastic form, scoring and assisting in almost every game. Senegalese defenders will surely have a lot of troubles in stopping him in the finals as well. The current price for Mahrez to score a goal in the final match is 4.00.
Algeria’s second match in the groups is particularly interesting for the finals. They locked horn with Senegal and exited the pitch as winners. Full time result was 1-0 with the only goal being scored by Belaili in the early stages of the second half. The Desert Warriors have wrapped up the first phase with another victory, this time against Tanzania 3-0. Islam Slimani was the man of this match with one goal and two assists. As you can see, Algeria has a lot of highly skilled individuals and not relying on the form of one or two players, which makes them even more dangerous.
The playoffs have continued in the same convincing fashion with a 3-0 victory against Guniea. The first big challenge was seen in the quarter-finals. There was no winner after 120 minutes of play against Ivory Coast (1-1 FT) so the winner was decided in a penalty shootout. Algerians were a bit luckier winning the lottery. A spot in the finals was secured thanks to another Riyad Mahrez’s brilliant move and a goal scored in the 95th minute against Nigeria.
Senegal Was The Biggest Favorite Pre-Tournament
Alliou Cisse’s squad had only one slip-up in AFCON 2019 so far, in the abovementioned clash against Algeria. Senegal was victorious in every other encounter, so the team spirits are probably at a very high level. The players will also be looking for revenge against the North African side. The Lions of Terenga won duels against Tanzania and Kenya in the groups, followed with a winning streak in the playoffs vs Uganda, Benin, and Tunisia. Interestingly, the last three games ended with an identical 1-0 result. Team leader and one of the best players in the tournament Sadio Mane is the highlighted player. Liverpool’s winger scored three goals so far. Bookies are offering high 3.10 odds to see him bag at least one more in the finals.
What are your thoughts on the AFCON 2019 finals? Who is going to be the new champion?
