After six year of absence, Inter are back in the Champions League. But, how are they gonna go remains the question. They’re in a pretty tough group, so even getting to the knockout stage is going to be difficult. As Barcelona are likely to finish on the top, there’s gonna be a big battle for the second spot between Inter and Tottenham, two teams that play one another this Tuesday evening at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza in Milan.
Inter
Inter have a fantastic team this season, as well as an experienced manager. But, they haven’t been showing their power so far. At least not in Serie A. This team has won only four points from four games, losing two matches along the way. Last weekend they lost to Parma, a newly-promoted team, which is guaranteed to have a bad effect on their morale.
But, poor performances of Inter are really surprising considering that this team has plenty of top-quality players. Actually, they seem strong in literally every position on the pitch. Their key man over the past couple of seasons has been Mauro Icardi, but he seems to be out of form at the moment, scoring zero goals in the new season.
Actually, Inter’s top scorer right now is Ivan Perisic, the guy who won silver at the World Cup this summer with Croatia. Perisic is just one of the players that appear to have the quality necessary to beat Tottenham, but these players don’t seem to work too well together. And that’s exactly the problem their manager, Luciano Spalletti will have to solve.
Tottenham
Same as Inter, Spurs also lost on weekend. But, unlike Inter, they played against a much tougher opponent, Liverpool. That’s their second defeat in a row, which is making people wonder do they actually have what it takes to challenge the Premier League title this season.
Tottenham didn’t make any signings over the summer, which means that their squad is exactly the same as last season. But, that also means that their bench might not be as deep as their fans would’ve liked. And with not enough players to cover for the first XI, the key men might get tired.
That’s something that might have happened to Harry Kane and a few others, who seem like they’re in need of rest. Apart from the tired players, Tottenham have another problem – a few of their key men are struggling with injuries. Hugo Lloris is definitely out and will have to be replaced by Michel Vorm, a Dutch goalie who hasn’t been too impressive this season.
On the bright side, Tottenham have a fairly easy schedule ahead in the Premier League, so they can switch their focus to the elite Euro competition. And champions League is a competition where they’ve always been great when playing away from home. In fact, they lost only one away game since 2011.
