Denmark vs Republic of Ireland Match Preview
Two of the underdogs in the World Cup qualifying play-offs take on each other as Denmark and Republic of Ireland kick-start their quest for a ticket to Russia next year. This first leg of the play-off clash will be played at the Parken Stadium in Copenhagen on Saturday, November 11.
Denmark were clubbed with Poland in Group ‘E’ of the qualifiers and as expected, they ended up second in the standings with 20 points. That was five less than leaders Poland but four more than third-placed Montenegro. The Danes were in the Euro 2016 playoffs too but lost narrowly to Sweden. So, this is the biggest chance for the hosts to make amends for that miss. Their form coming into this game makes good reading as Denmark are unbeaten in their last nine games winning five times. That included a stunning 4-0 win over Poland and although they failed to beat Romania in the final qualifying encounter, the hosts will be confident of progressing to the World Cup. Their record at home is solid too with nine matches seeing them win six, draw two and lose just once – to Montenegro. This run included wins over Poland and Iceland combined with a draw against Germany.
Republic of Ireland
Republic of Ireland were drawn in a tight group involving Serbia, Wales and Austria. True to the nature, the qualification was open till the last match. Republic of Ireland visited Wales trailing them by one point but managed to score a 1-0 win to leapfrog their rivals and seal the playoff place. It was James McClean’s goal that shocked wales and the visitors will hope for more magic as they eye success in play-offs where they are playing for a fifth time having had success only once in the past – World Cup 2002. Their away form in the recent past doesn’t make good reading as they won four, draw four and lost three of their last 11 away games in all competitions.
